In today’s environment, the skin takes more punishment tan in the past so the area of sensitive skin care is large but just what does sensitive skin mean? Sensitive skin is defined as skin that cannot cope with the effects of the environment or other conditions like certain materials or products that irritate it and can cause redness and sometimes swelling. Special sensitive skin care products have been designed that will not irritate the skin and can help where the skin is already experiencing problems.

The degree of sensitivity can however vary from person to person and depending on that, the type of skin care procedures may vary too. However, it is known that in most instances, the skin will not react well too any type of detergent, including soap, or other products with chemicals.

The damage may be happening over a period of time without the affected person actually knowing as it is a matter of their tolerance level that will actually show up the problem. For the unfortunate person who suffers with sensitive skin will have obvious signs of distress much sooner.

Manufacturers are now more aware of what compounds can cause problems and corrective measures are taken where ingredients are replaced with compounds that do not cause problems or the amount of irritant is reduced to acceptable levels. The way to reduce the effects of the skin sensitivity is too source sensitive skin care products and make sure only these are used but if you know what area your sensitivity lies in then check the ingredients carefully to make sure there is nothing contained you should be wary of.

Even within the range of sensitive skin care products available, choose those that have the minimum of preservatives, colorings and other additives. Do not use toners if at all possible as most of them are alcohol based and will probably cause further irritation so are not recommended for sensitive skin.

When you are doing the washing, it is advisable to wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the effects of the detergents and if rubber causes you problems then it is possible to wear cotton gloves beneath the rubber ones. Another situation that causes a problem for sensitive skin is the sun so if you intend to go out in strong sunlight, you will need to apply a special sunscreen.

This type of precaution is also relevant even if it isn’t sunny as the atmospheric pollution found almost everywhere now will also aggravate the skin and a suitable barrier cream or hypoallergenic moisturizer should help protect vulnerable skin. On returning it will be necessary to clean your face gently without using any products containing soap or alcohol and that any exfoliation that takes place is carried out with the utmost care so as not to irritate the skin.

Whenever makeup or cosmetics are used, try not to overuse or over wear them and only use makeup remover which will not cause skin irritation. So as you can see there is much more to consider when looking after sensitive skin, and it is more about being careful with your skin both in terms of sensitive skin care products and protection against environments affects on skin.
